Important Note: This article applies to legacy Blockchain.com DeFi Wallet users who set a secondary (spending) password before April 2020. Blockchain.com removed the ability to create new secondary passwords in April 2020. If you created your wallet after that date, or if you use a Blockchain.com Trading Account (custodial), this article does not apply to you.

One of the earliest wallet platforms, Blockchain.com (originally Blockchain.info) was founded in 2011 and released its first Bitcoin wallet in January 2012. Since its release, the Blockchain wallet has received quite a number of accolades as well as commonly being listed in many top cryptocurrency wallet lists.

For many years Blockchain gave its users the optional ability to set a second or "spending" password. If you set a second password, you could login to your account with your primary password, view balances, edit settings, etc. But, if you actually wanted to move or spend funds, you would be prompted for the second password.

DeFi Wallet vs Trading Account

Blockchain.com now offers two types of wallets:

• DeFi Wallet (Non-Custodial): You control your private keys. Secondary passwords only affected these wallets. Password recovery requires either remembering the password or using recovery services.
• Trading Account (Custodial): Blockchain.com manages your funds. Standard account recovery options are available through their support. Secondary passwords do not apply.

If you're unsure which type you have, the DeFi Wallet requires a 12-word recovery phrase that you wrote down when creating it.

How to Recover Your Secondary Password

If you have lost access to both your primary and your secondary password, recovering access to your funds is trickier. That's because to login successfully, Blockchain now requires that you know both your primary and your secondary passwords.

While primary passwords for Blockchain wallets created today have to be at least 10 characters long, secondary passwords have much less restrictive requirements. In fact, secondary passwords only had to be 4 characters long.

Start by identifying very short passwords that you might have used for your second password. Because the requirements were so short, you could have used, for example, a debit card pin, a 4-digit year, a birthdate, etc.

After Recovery: Secure Your Wallet

Once you've recovered access to your wallet, take these steps immediately:

• Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Blockchain.com supports Google Authenticator, Yubikey, and SMS codes. Use an authenticator app for best security.
• Update your primary password: Choose a strong password of 10+ characters that you haven't used elsewhere.
• Secure your recovery phrase: If you haven't already, write down your 12-word recovery phrase and store it offline in a secure location.
• Consider moving funds: If your password was weak or potentially compromised, consider transferring funds to a new wallet with fresh credentials.
